I believe that qualifies as ill, at least from a technical standpoint.

I’ve never been a fan of people taking to the internet to express disproportionate grief for celebrities they’ve never met, but it seemed wrong not to say something in response to the death of the Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch. I’ve been a big Beasties fan for a long time, and the loss of MCA is truly a loss for music as a whole purely because the Beastie Boys were consistently great and it’s scientifically impossible to have a bad time while listening to their music. I was at what turned out to be one of their last UK shows a few years ago, and I feel tremendously lucky to have been there – it remains one of the best, most fun live music experiences I have ever had.

Favourite Beastie Boys moments

Shake Your Rump

Contains one of the best lyrical boasts in history: “I got more rhymes than Jamaica got mangoes.”

So Whatcha Want

Ooh, that guitar bend. Yeeeeeeeah, you can’t front on that.

Yes, it’s obvious, but that’s because it still sounds absolutely fantastic. Hollering along to this is about the most fun it’s possible to have.

Super Disco Breaking

Nothing sounds quite like an 8-0-8.

Rhymin and Stealin

Equates rapping with being a pirate. Brilliant from “Becaaaaaauuuuse mutiny on the bounty’s what we’re all about” through to “we rob and steal and rhyme and pillage”.
